(Belated) Results 8/23/12
Dear Mr Bumpy Face Racers,
I am very sorry for my lack of posted results for the last several weeks. I know you have all been patiently awaiting them. I have no excuses, other than my own laziness. Well, that and I broke my finger (in July... Can I still use that excuse?)
RESULTS for 8.23.12 have been submitted to USA cycling: https://www.usacycling.org/results/index.php?year=2012&id=1918&info_id=54792
Additionally, I am working to get ALL the results uploaded to USA cycling. I am new to this process and there is an interesting learning curve, so they may trickle rather than pour into USA cycling. But I assure you they'll get there!
Without further adieu....

RAIN cancellation
Well, it's raining.
I think I'm gonna have to call it.
If the rain clears by 5, and it seems as though Mr. Bumpy might have a chance to dry, I will go up and set up. But as I type this, I hear hail.
SO.... here is a really cool piece done on that night when my garmin read 119...

As the Olympics come to an end...
I thought this was a pretty neat little guide to Olympic track races.
Cycling Tips Track Guide
I hope everyone has been watching as much as they can! I watch these races and get a surge of excitement and inspiration. There have been some incredible, beautiful races happening during the course of these games.
Keep watching, continue riding, remain inspired.

August 2, 2012 Penrose Park Velodrome 50th Birthday Bash
Happy 50th Birthday Mr Bumpy Face! What a fun night of racing! and celebrating!
Huge thank yous go out to Brian "Kayce" Shelton for organizing such a great night of racing and birthday festivities!
We may or may not have held the first Keiren in a long time (First rule of Penrose Keiren - no one talks about Penrose Keiren, or at least the driver of the moto).
Tyler was certainly busy all night, with the grilling of burgers and dogs and what-not ;).
Molly made the most amazing cake replica of the track (Look out Cake Boss!!) - it was delicious too!
Special thanks to the Penrose Birthday Sponsors: Big Shark, Stephen Wilkes, Russ & Adrienne Murphy/Mesa Cycles, Schlafly (! For the KEG!!), Joe Stahl and Karl Becker (apologies to anyone I may have inadvertantly left off)
The weather looked uncertain for a while, with some not so pretty, dark clouds moving by. Just as it was time to start racing, a little rain fell but it was as if the track knew we wouldn't accept no for an answer and dried up pretty quickly. Eva tested it out on her unicycle to be sure it was ready.
We had 31 registered racers and several new-to-the-track people who just gave it a spin between races. I think the spectators for the night stole the show. I don't think I've seen that many people out at the track at one time (the picture here doesn't do it justice!) Joe Stahl and Karl Becker provided some excellent commentary/track rules and a few history lessons!
The above photos were taken on my iPhone, but we had some fabulous "real" photographers out there:
Photo's from Mike Martin, thevikingstudio.com
Photo's from Tom Bremer
The "Firecrackers" at the end of the night were a nice touch ;) The cars speeding away on to hwy 70 added to the excitement!
As an aside, we have started to fund raise to maintain/resurface the track. Donations are gladly accepted on race nights at registration.

Recap... sorta
Gah! I think that mentioning the heat will soon be like telling someone that they have no hair, when they don't. Obvious and unnecessary. Welcome to the midwest! It's what we live in. So okay, another hot one (can you tell that the heat is annoying me?)
We yet again had an excellent turnout of 23, despite the nasty haze that hangs over Mr. Bumpy.
Caitlin Silovsky officially gets the furthest traveled award for this season, as she journeyed from Topeka Kansas just to race with the lot of us. She then made the trek home after a pretty tough night - a 4+ hour drive! Thanks for coming out Caitlin!
Many familiar faces joined us for the first time this year including Devlin McDonough, Nick Chevalley, and Dave Smith. Kate Hrubes jumped back in before heading off to Colorado next week and Ms. Soli is back and stronger than ever!
Missin some folks who are trading weeks with the Dirt Crit series! Too bad two awesome types of racing are happening on the same night. For some prettysolid hilarious updates on Dirt Crittdom check out the Team Seagal Blog.
We had some fun races to watch like when Andrew Petty sprinted from the line in the scratch race and staved off the field taking first place in the A's! Dave Stone had some solid wins and I am convinced that the points race is his event. During the C scratch race Todd Nowlin had a very good lead and held it and held it until Caitlin's legs exploded with power and she came from half a lap back to take the win.
I usually know its especially good when I have trouble staying off the track during a race. When things get really good I tend to make my way as close as possible to the edge of the track, as if it's going to help me see better. Last night was like that.
Thanks as always to those who get there early, stay late, and do what they can to help out!
Keep an eye out on the Facebook jazz to get info about our 50th anniversary party!

Sittin on the sidelines
Well I took the night off. My body said I needed it, but goodness is it hard to watch everyone race while you just stand there! I did get the chance to see things from a different perspective. When I'm out there racing it's hard to focus on what is happening races. I'm usually too busy drinking water, sweating, and jacking my jaw.
I had the chance to take some photos (not the most professional) and I even got a lesson in proper ringing of the last lap bell.
I had the chance to take some photos (not the most professional) and I even got a lesson in proper ringing of the last lap bell.
Some amazing and unexpected wins took place last night. Dave Stone killed it in the Win And Out, taking first in a field of 21! That's huge! Zachary Slavens nipped Emilie at the line in the scratch race, and Rob Ollermann found those endurance legs in the points race with a third place.
I am infinitely impressed by the fellow racers.
ALSO, Kayce has been working SUPER hard to come up with plans for Penrose's 50th anniversary party. He has set a date - August 5 for the party. It will be a night of racing with food, beer, and more! If you'd like to contribute, please contact Kayce via STLbiking in the velodrome forum.
See you all next week!

7.12.12 recap & results
The Hot temperatures took a break and mother nature gave us a pleasant night of racing at the track for a change. We had 27 racers tonight including several who travel for miles and miles just to race with us. Danny Stevenson, Frank Brummer and Hayden Warner all traveled from the Effingham IL area - about 115 miles! I think they win for most miles traveled with new comer Tom Fritschen traveling about 90 miles from Quincy. Ashley Rethemeyer made the trek from Hermann MO to grace us with her presence and held her own tonight in the B races!!
Cool points of the night: We had 1 junior return for another night of racing: Welcome back Jeremy Roberts! and Good job holding your own against the ladies (Some of whom are Very Very fast!!)
The first round of races were 5 lap scratch races. While we had a mere 8 racers in the A race, a grand smashing total of 21 lined up for the B race! It was crazy & amazing to watch that many in one race (and a short race, at that).
The 50 lap points race made another appearance for the B/A category. It's just amazing to watch! I can't imagine racing for that long! :) Good job everyone!!

Results and Recap from 7.5.12
It was another hot one! My Garmin read 103 in the shade and over 107 on the track. Thankfully a nice breeze and fabulous company kept us all feeling cool (like Fonzie?) all night. Steven was back from the road again and spoiled us all with his presence, iced towels, ice water and sports drinks.
Molly did a fabulous job again of getting set up/registration up and running and still somehow saved some energy for the races. We had 21 people show up tonight. Mostly the dedicated few from week after week, but we saw some first timers tonight too! You all get a HUGE round of applause for showing up for your first track race on another HOFH night! Officials extraordinaire Sara and Marijn kept us on track (both literally and figuratively!) and produced these fine results you see below!!
On a personal note: Thanks to Emilie and Sarah Turner, with Molly and myself, we had a women's field of 4!
Some of the B racers tried their hand, er wheels at A races, some C's jumped up to try B races and we even had enough to run C races. We were able to get in 3 rounds of races, with a couple of extra/fun stuff at the end of the night. Everyone survived, with no major mishaps or heat stroke! (Fortunately Sarah's flat tire/pseudo crash did not result in any injuries!)
Round One brought us all 5 lap Scratch races. The A racers let Mike Flanigan get a little gap and he just ran away with it.

Penrose on the internets
I forgot to mention that a guy showed up to do some filming for a spot on some local media's website. I know, so informative. I forgot the gentleman's name, although I may have said boob, bra, or both to him in my heat induced haze on Thursday. Steven has his contact info, so I'm sure that before Penrose gets absorbed into the internet once again, we will see a video.

Results and Recap from 6/28
Good Morning! Hope everyone has recovered from an intense day of heat! Some of us decided to brave the track last night and I'm really glad that we did. It was a pretty epic night of racing. At one point I was at the starting line and looked down to see my Garmin read 119 degrees.
I feel like we had a pretty damn good turn out considering that sweltering Sahara heat. We had 16 people. I being the only woman, and there being only one or two C's, forced us to combine races and run A and B groups only. This turned out to be a good thing. The night ended a bit earlier and many got to face the challenge of riding with some faster folks.
Steven returned for last night's races and showed up uber prepared to pamper us through the night. We had a water jug full of ice and water, a cooler of poweraid, and a huge tub with ice, water, and towels.
Okay so here are the results:
Round 1 - 3 Lap Sprint From a standing start. No neutral.
A's
1. 256 Hayden Warner
2. 16 Robert Mayfield
3. 11 Joe Walsh
4. 26 Kevin Weyman
B's
1. 52 Zachary Slavens
2. 50 Matt Karnowski
3. 271 Frank Brummer
4. 239 Dave Stone
Round 2 - Unknown Distance Between 4 & 17 laps
A's
1. 256 Hayden Warner
2. 11 Joe Walsh
3. 46 Chak Lattanand
4. 16 Robert Mayfield
5. 38 Rob Ollerman
6. 26 Kevin Weyman
B's
1. 238 William Howells
2. 52 Zachary Slavens
3. 50 Matt Karnowski
4. 0 Molly Brady
5. 262 Kurt Schenk
6. 12 Brian Shelton
7. 40 Jim Smith
8. 270 Zak Hafner
9. 239 Dave Stone
Round 3 - Points Race 50 Laps Combined A & B
1. 256 Hayden Warner 67 points
2. 11 Joe Walsh 59 points
3. 271 Frank Brummer 29 points
4. 239 Dave Stone 4 points
5. 12 Brian Shelton 1 points
6. 262 Kurt Schenk
7. 238 William Howells
8. 50 Matt Karnowski
9. 270 Zak Hafner
Round 4 - Kayce's Crawl
1. 46 Chak Lattanand
2. 50 Matt Karnowski
3. 12 Brian Shelton
4. 52 Zachary Slavens
5. 239 Dave Stone
6. 271 Frank Brummer
7. 256 Hayden Warner
It's pretty obvious that Hayden Warner showed up and swept that track with his opponents. At the end of that insane 50 lap points race he sprinted to the finish with a gap on the field. Bill Howells flew off the front from the start in the unknown distance and we never managed to catch him, even when pacing with half lap pulls, and he took first.
There are a handful of guys that I have watched get better and better as the season progresses from last year, and a couple that have shown up and done very well for themselves. Zach Slavens just keeps improving and Dave Stone came back after suffering a broken leg at the track a few years ago and has held his own.
I want to wish Robert, Kevin, Zach, and Russ good luck up at Northbrook this weekend! They are going for a sprint competition being held on the 30th.
Also, there was mention that Eduardo (whose name I have repeatedly misspelled, my apologies) has sustained an injury. I wish him a speedy recovery and if there is anything us folks at Penrose can do, let us know.
See ya'll next week!

Half Off Hundred
Looks like tomorrow will be a half off hundred night.
If Mother Nature intends to burn us up, as the forecast predicts, racing will be half price.

Results from 6/21
Holy Crap. What a night of racing! It was hard, damn hard. But everyone did so well and we had a good time doing it, which counts the most. Steven is still doing his mechanical god thing, so we have been left to fend for ourselves once again. I thank everyone for being so helpful. Again in setting up, cleaning up, breaking down, encouraging, and officiating. It's awesome and we have a solid crew.
Seriously, great night of racing. The rain never came (woop!) and the night started cloudy. The cloud cover was gone by seven and turn one became incredibly bright. It got hot, yadda yadda.
Nights such as last are never easy. A flying 200 takes immense focus and a ton of energy. Going from that into a snowball, with a sprint every lap is kinda a double whammy. The evening's events continued that pattern. It's always so impressive to me to see the folks I race with maintain their strength and energy through such tough races. Nice work.
So here are the results, and I apologize for the weird set up of match sprint results. I tried my best to properly interpret last night's results as given to me by our officials, and they did their best to score a race that can be difficult even for those very familiar with track racing. If you find any error, please let me know and I will try to sort it out!

So a few cool things happened, and I wish I could remember all of em. It was cool to see different people's strategies during the Snowball. In our women's race, Kate went off the front from the start to rack up as many opening points as possible. If I remember correctly, Andrew Petty did the same. Some will hold out for the final few laps when points are higher, the trick is hanging on or catching that person who went from the start.
In the Unknown Distance, Andrew again, took a chance in going off the front when he felt it might be close and did a fine job of holding his place, making Edwardo work to catch him and beat him at the line.
Match Sprinting is strategically one of the hardest races. It's super short (2 laps) and you flip for position for the first half lap. We have probably all seen video of track racers trying to out track stand one another before breaking into a full sprint, it's crazy.
Robert made a psych out on Russ during their Match Sprint, which was a cool tactic. I feel like Match Sprinting is epitome of track racing. Because track is not always about who is the strongest or fastest, so much relies on who has the best strategy, and can work the field. With that being said, I'm personally horrible at it, and love seeing my fellow racers out there doing their thing... we can learn so much by watching.
On a final note, I was super excited to see Todd Nowlin out there and to have Sarah Turner show up! We also had a few people come and scope things out. Hopefully we'll have more competition soon!
See you next week
Molly

I have to admit, when I heard Steven was going to be out of town for a couple of weeks, I got a little nervous. Track night is a big deal for so many people and we all value it so much, so I wanted to make sure everyone got just as good an experience even with our main track resource gone.
Gotta say, we did a damn fine job. When I arrived, a few were already there and ready to get things swept, set up, and started. Russ, Adrienne, and Kacye took up some brooms to sweep while Matt used the blower he brought from home. It might have been the fastest we have ever cleaned ole Bumpy.
The tent got set, snacks were set out (thanks Steph!), and a steady stream of folks began arriving. We had a nice turn out, 29 in all, and were even able to run two separate juniors races!

Holy Crap that was a lot to type out. Seriously, if I ever hear another person complain about seeing results the day after, for any type of race (especially ones using hand scoring and relying on busy people to then post said results) again I will bear my teeth and growl. Referencing every bib number is a pain in the rump! With that being said, if there are any name typos, bib number mistakes, or even discrepancies in scoring, please send me a message and I will do my best to correct any mistakes that have been made.
Seriously a great night of racing everyone! I wish I were as attentive as Steven and could do a play by play of tactical stuff for the night of racing, but I tend to spend my time between races jabbering away and drinking as much water as possible.
We did have a scary moment that was handled very well. During the C unknown distance race, a fella (whose name I do not remember, apologies) dropped his chain. He did a nice job coasting it out while the field passed and then dropped down track and rolled into the infield where he was able to slow and come safely to a stop. Nice work guy!
Between her psych out noise making and strategizing, Cristel Santiago managed to spice up the women's races which is always fun.
At the end of the evening Scott O and I talked a little bit about Penrose's 50th birthday party that we plan to hold towards the end of the season. The few ideas we tossed around are sure to make for a good time! If anyone has suggestions, please post em in the comments here.
Once again, I want to thank our wonderful officials who provide encouragement and help keep up the easy going, friendly track environment. They still manage to keep in professional.
See ya'll next week!

I'm Missin Out
I am feeling bummed that I missed last week and now this week.
Track nights are nights that no matter how weak I feel while racing (cause we all have those moments when we feel great all week and then go to the track and feel crushed) I always come out of it feeling stronger, faster, and euphoric.
Last week I was a little too skeptical of mother nature and counted on her dumping buckets of rain on our Mr. Bumpy all night long. So instead of arranging a ride to the track, I had my sister take me to run errands (read: go shopping?)
Tonight I had to work, because tomorrow I get to go to the doctor! If specialists gave lollipops in the shape of their specialty it might make office visits something to look forward to.
I will be in attendance from here on out. The Track Master Wilkes is making an awesome voyage to wrench for some cool ass races and I have been drawn from the lotto to take care of race registration in his stead. This I am excited about, however, after watching Joe and PJ try to juggle registration and attempting to race, I'm thinking those strong woman moments will be few.
1988 was the first year that the Olympics held events for women in track cycling.
Here is the women's Team Pursuit.
I hope everyone raced well tonight! It was gorgeous!

Results AND Recap from May 24th
What another great night of racing it was. I have a little
more of a recap from the last track night so here it goes. All results are at the bottom of this post (all that I have anyway).
There were a total of 31 riders, eleven of which was their
first time out at the track this season. There were two new juniors but Eva
Berger was absent because her school was singing the National Anthem at the
ballpark that evening. We did have two junior-only races during the evening.
There were four women racing.
Hey, During the time before we race the track always needs
at least some sweeping and remember I offer $5.00 off of registration fee to
those willing to work a broom for about fifteen minutes. There is no
requirement to sweep but if the track is not sweep before each night then there
will be more mishaps (flat, etc.). Please help out with the sweeping and more importantly
if there is someone on the track with a broom please give him or her some
courtesy and safety and do not ride hard or fast right by them. I really need
some improvement with this issue, the alternative is that the track will be
closed to all riders until all of the sweeping is done. Warning, I might just
employ this at some time especially if the track is such a mess as it was on
the 17th.
The highlights of the evening were mainly in round two. In
the A snowball race Kevin Weyman took a flyer and quickly collected the first
three sprints and held on for second place on the next sprint. That effort
awarded him enough points (9) to hold on to fifth place overall in the race.
Zachery Slavens followed Kevin’s example in the B’s snowball and did the same
but one better, he took all four of the first sprints (10) and he too held onto
fifth overall. Both were edged out of fourth place in the round due to placing
on the final lap. Good job gentlemen!
The Women’s points race was together for all of the sprints.
No rider went up or down a lap. It was quite a different story in the Men’s A
points race. That event blew wide apart and was a bit of a challenge to score.
I apologize to my officials; I should have given you more assistance in judging
that race. I will do so in the future any time we run another points race.
There was not enough time to run points races for the B’s
and the C’s and each deserve their own event so combining them was not fair
either. So we came to a decision to run Miss & Out races for the last two
groups. In the B event Dave Stone took the flyer but the group worked to chase
him down while still trying not to get eliminated them. In the C Miss & Out
Kurt Schenk showed four riders exactly how to do it. He was well behind in each
of the first four laps only to make sure he was not boxed in and accelerated
just enough not to be the last rear wheel to cross the line. Textbook execution!
We did get a little scare during the junior chariot race.
Maddie was riding faster and faster as the night went on. She had the save of
the night in turn three when she lost her footing on the flat pedals but she
did not crash. She stayed upright, finished the race and handled the incident
like a seasoned track rider. Good job girl.
That is about it for my recap. Keep posted about next week
though, the extended forecast states there is a chance of thunderstorms on the
31st. As always I will broadcast track conditions when the weather
threatens through the usual outlets (stlbiking forum and twitter). Also I need
to be in Chicago mid-day on Friday for three days of racing up north. Thanks as
always to everyone who is involved, to all of those who lend a hand with
running things, to my officials doing their best to score, and to everyone else
interested no matter how little that is.
